42,826 people filed into Memorial Stadium for the Jayhawks early 11:30 kick-off against Iowa State. Both teams had quite a lot riding on this game; A win for Kansas would make them bowl eligible for the second time in three years, and a win for Iowa State would give them the outright title in the Big XII North. Things started out like anticipated, The KU defense was strong in the first quarter as was ISU's. Kansas sophomore kicker Scott Webb made a 48 yard field-goal to put the Hawks up, 3-0 KU. On the next Cyclones drive, Bret Meyer took them down the field for a touchdown, 7-3 ISU. After the second Iowa State interception, Meyer once again hooked up with wide receiver Todd Blythe for another score, 14-3 ISU. Near the end of the first half the Jayhawks were driving yet again only to be stopped by the third Cyclone interception of the half.
*Halftime: ISU-14 KU-3*
The second half started out much like the first, a defensive battle. KU was able to get inside the red-zone but once again was forced to settle with only a field goal, this time a 33-yard chip shot, 14-6 ISU. Now let's stop for a minute and thank whoever it was for putting in instant replay for college games this year...thank you. Now into the fourth quarter KU needed a touchdown, so on 4th and goal Mark Mangino called the old quarterback sneak with Brian Luke (Swanson injured himself in the 3rd quarter). After 20 seconds of debating, Luke didn't get in, Iowa State ball...but wait..."The previous play is under review". After the review, it was an obvious touchdown and the two-point conversion was successful, 14-14. The momentum had totally shifted, but the Cyclones didn't seem to notice, they went 56 yards in 3:14 and recaptured the lead, 21-14 ISU. After a Jayhawk turnover with inside 3:30 left, Kansas fans thought the season was over, but the defense came through yet again and forced a punt with just over 1:00 remaining. Then the offense put together the best drive of the year by far, just embarrassing the Iowa State defense and scoring on a 14-yard pass pattern from Luke to Fields, 21-21. The Cyclones failed to score...overtime.
*End of Regulation: ISU-21 KU-21*
Kansas won the coin toss and elected to defer and play defense first. The Iowa State made an idiotic decision and chose to go toward the North end zone when all thier fans were at the South end zone! The KU defense had a quick three-and-out and the Cyclones kicker butchered a 41-yard kick and gave the Hawks an opportunity to win with a score. KU did three rushing plays to get Webb on for his 3rd (and hopefully final) field goal attempt, a 34-yarder..."The kick is up...it's right down the middle! The Jayhawks are bowl eligible!"
**Final Score: KU-24 ISU-21**
KU wins, they're going to a bowl game, you'll know which one next time...
